Mr. Canary is a Different Take On Birding

At Mr. Canary, we embrace being a little different! And, we are “different” in all the right ways, if we do say so ourselves! One key way we are different is in our recognition (and, our embrace!) of the REAL reason people feed birds. According to surveys, more than 80% of people who feed birds attribute their participation in the activity to one reason, or more precisely, to one person:  a loved one.

In an odd way, feeding birds is almost always an “inherited” interest. Over the years, we’ve heard many, many stories about how people got started in the activity. In 24 years, though, exactly ONE person has ever said they “just decided, one day, to give bird feeding a try.” Instead, what we hear again and again are loving, funny, inspiring stories and memories about lifelong connections to loved ones, present and past. Feeding birds is an improbable family bond that spans ages.

The ‘secret’ of birding, is that hanging a feeder gives us a reason to LOOK UP.  Historically, humans have physically and metaphorically ‘looked up’ for guidance, courage, hope, or in gratitude. Today, looking up can also be a simple reprieve from screens, a break from our virtual life to savor our REAL one.

The truth is, humans don’t feed birds for the birds’ benefit- we do it for OUR benefit! Let’s face it, when a feeder is empty for weeks at a time, does it mean all the birds are gone? Of course not, you need only refill your feeder to prove it. Birds need us much less than we need them.

So, if it’s really about us (and it really IS ) why do we accept the the bird feeding status quo of chores and inconveniences? When virtually everything else we buy offers a convenience-option, why does bird feeding get a pass?

That’s what WE wondered.  And it bugged us so much we  invented a bird feeding system that uses a ‘TV dinners for birds’-style of bird feeding. Instead of awkward, bulky bags we put seed in convenient, sealed, recyclable, stackable trays. That means,

NO MORE:

  • heavy lifting; or, 
  • scoops; or,
  • funnels; or
  • storage bins to keep rodents out of seed bags; or,
  • scrubbing dirty, gross feeding surfaces

 

We eliminated the worst part of feeding birds, so you can focus on the best part: ENJOYING them!
