ADA is 30!

“The Congress finds that physical or mental disabilities in no way diminish a person’s right to fully participate in all aspects of society…”

Those are the first few words of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the signing of that legislation.

Around here, it’s kind of a big deal. For starters, we have family members who deal with Disability; and, the Mr. Canary production team does, as well. From our advantage of living around it, we have first-hand experience with Disability, and it’s ever-persistent sidekick, Discrimination.

Like so many of our civil rights laws, we’ve made advances, but… (you know where this is going, right?) there’s still a long way to go.

For example, people with disabilities are still the most impoverished and endure the highest unemployment, as high as 80% unemployment in high employment times. Imagine the impact COVID will have on their ability to get work when our economy fully reopens.

It’s more than disappointing, it’s a loss of all of us.

A 2018 study shows that businesses that make efforts to hire people with disabilities outperform companies who don’t. Their revenues are higher, ditto their net income and profit margins. The Dept. of Labor found that employers who intentionally hired workers with disabilities had a 90% increase in employee retention.

Also, hiring people with disabilities lowers absenteeism and enhances motivation in the workplace.

It makes sense when you think about it. In today’s rapidly evolving work environments, hiring people who make creative and innovative adaptations to change – every day, as a matter of living – is a no-brainer choice.

It’s hard to overstate the power of ‘work.’ Beyond its ability to add to our national prosperity, work propels us to independence and gives us a greater sense of contribution and accomplishment. We all deserve that.

If you or someone you know will be hiring soon, please share this with them. Diversity, in all its forms, strengthens, enlightens, and enriches us.
